Summer is here and that means some very hot weather is on its way. We want to make sure our couriers on the Just Eat Network stay as safe as possible while delivering in the heat.
So, we’ve made a list for you to follow and ensure you’re staying safe on your deliveries, especially during a heatwave.
Checking yourself
- Stay hydrated – Always carry a water bottle with you, and if you run out, our restaurant partners can refill this for you on request.
- Wear sunglasses and a cap – These will keep you protected from the sun and safeguard you from sunstroke.
- Wear lightweight clothing – To help you stay cool, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
- Wear sunscreen – This will protect you from sunburn, which can happen easily when driving around delivering.
- Use the shade – By parking in the shade during pick up and deliveries, you’re protecting both you and your vehicle from overheating.
- Take regular breaks – We recommend you rest and take time out of the sun when possible, so you can cool down and rehydrate.
Checking your car
- Pre-check – Make sure to read up on our vehicle checks post, to ensure your car is ready for any weather.
- Check tyres – Heat can affect the pressure in your tyres. When it’s hot, the air expands and this can cause a tyre blowout. So be sure to check your tyres for any signs of damage.
- Check fluids – If you feel like you’re overheating the chances are that your car does too. Ensuring that you have the correct fluids – engine coolant in particular, but also oil, water, and wiper fluid – before you start your journey can save you a lot of stress later.
- Check battery – Hot weather has the potential to make your car battery fail because it causes the battery fluids to evaporate. It’s a good idea to get it tested before setting out on a long journey.
- Emergency Car Kit check – Preparing an emergency car kit during the summer months can be a good precaution. You could include water, non-perishable foods, a torch, jump leads, and a first aid kit.
Checking your bike
- Wear the right clothes – Tarmac absorbs the heat and in turn heats the air above, so as a cyclist you can really feel the heat. Opt for lightweight and breathable clothing and consider well-ventilated shoes and a helmet to keep your head cool and protected from the sun.
- Carry proper equipment – Stay refreshed by carrying ice packs or multiple water bottles to ensure you stay well-hydrated. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also vital for protecting your skin and eyes from the sun. Carrying a basic repair kit with spare tubs, a multitool, and a mini-pump can handle unexpected mechanical issues.
- Optimise your bike – Start by checking your tire pressure to minimize the risk of blowouts in hot conditions. Lubricate your chain and other moving parts, as high temperatures can increase friction and wear. Invest in heat-resistant brake pads to maintain effective braking power and consider applying heat-reflective tapes to handlebars and frame components.
