Taking pride in the past and future

Celebrating Pride at Just Eat

Whether you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, LGBT History Month in February offers a beautiful blend of reflection, education, and celebration. It’s a time to delve deep into the rich tapestry of events, individuals, and movements that shaped the queer community’s journey.

What is LGBT History Month?

Rooted initially in the USA, LGBT History Month was conceptualised in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher. Wilson believed in the critical importance of recognising and celebrating the role of LGBTQ+ individuals in world history. In the UK, LGBT History Month originated in 2005, started by Schools OUT UK. Its primary focus was to enlighten people about the significance and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout British history, and to promote an inclusive modern society. From the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967 to the groundbreaking Gender Recognition Act in 2004, the UK has seen pivotal moments in LGBTQ+ rights.

The theme for UK LGBT History Month this year is Medicine, highlighting the work and lives of historical LGBT+ people who worked in medicine and healthcare.

The beauty of LGBT History Month lies not just in its ability to educate but also in its capacity to inspire. By revisiting history, we can draw strength from past victories and gather momentum for the challenges that lie ahead. The journey to full acceptance and rights is still ongoing, and every bit of knowledge arms us better to champion the cause.

What’s the Takeaway?

LGBT History Month is not just a backward glance but a beacon for the future. It’s a reminder of where we’ve been, the battles fought, and the journey ahead. Whether you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, take this month to learn, appreciate, and get inspired. Let’s carry forward the legacy, championing love and equality every day. 🏳️‍🌈❤️📚
