Setting up your e-bike

To stay safe on the road, it’s crucial to set up your e-bike correctly. A few quick checks and having the right gear can help you avoid accidents and enjoy a more comfortable ride.

Pre-start checks: The 3-Minute Rule

Before you head out, take just 3 minutes to check your e-bike and ensure everything is in top shape. We’ve summarised the key checks to do below.

1️⃣ Tyres: When squeezing them, they should feel solid, not soft. Check the correct pressure printed on the side of the tyre.
2️⃣ Seat and height: Adjust your seat to the right height and make sure it’s inserted at least 5cm into the frame for stability.
3️⃣ Brakes and wheels: Lift the handlebars, spin the front wheel, and test the brakes. Make sure:

  • The wheel is securely attached to the forks.
  • It spins freely without rubbing against the brakes.
  • Brakes and gears work smoothly.

These simple checks can prevent breakdowns and accidents, saving you time and trouble later.

Gear up

Before you hit the road, make sure you have these essentials:

  • Helmet  – This is legally required and is a must-have to protect your head in case of accidents
  • High-vis vest – Stay visible to drivers, especially at night or in bad weather.
  • Eye protection (UV-rated) – Shields your eyes from dust, wind, and harmful sun rays.
  • Enclosed shoes – Reduces the risk of foot injuries and keeps your feet secure on the pedals.
  • Mobile phone holder – Handling your phone while riding is illegal and dangerous. Use a holder for safe navigation.
  • Waterproof clothing – Be ready for any weather! A good rain jacket and pants will keep you dry and comfortable.
  • Sun protection – Apply sunscreen even on cloudy days, and take breaks to avoid heat exhaustion.
